About the Institute

The Upstate Neurological Institute brings together multidisciplinary teams of experts dedicated to the Upstate Medical University mission to improve the health of the communities we serve through education, biomedical research and patient care. 

As a regional leader in patient care, our dedicated teams include neurologists, neurosurgeons, endovascular neurosurgeons, interventional radiologists, neuropathologists and rehabilitation therapists each specializing in your condition and treatment options. Together, we offer comprehensive adult and pediatric care for the Central New York Community and surrounding region, covering over 20 counties spanning New York State from the Canadian border to the Pennsylvania state line. 

Our 70+ internationally and nationally recognized Institute faculty also serve the educational needs of graduate students, medical students, residents in neurology and other fields plus fellows in various aspects of clinical neuroscience. The Upstate neurology residency is one of the largest in the state.

Our research team is engaged in basic, clinical and translational research in Neuroscience with the goals of furthering the understanding of neurological diseases and developing new treatments that will improve the lives of our patients. We perform cutting edge research both in basic science laboratories and the clinical research unit.

The Upstate Neurological Institute has one of the fastest growing teams dedicated to brain and nerve health in the Northeast, pulling neuro specialists from around the world here to Syracuse, New York.

Upstate Neurology

Many patients begin their journey for diagnosis and treatment of their condition with our board-certified Neurology providers in one of our convenient outpatient clinic locations, or during a hospital visit at Upstate University Hospital or Upstate Community Hospital.

The Upstate Neurological Institute has dedicated spaces and teams for the treatment of your condition including the Infusion Center for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis, neuromuscular disorders and headaches. Our Board-certified Stroke physicians are available 24/7/365 via the Upstate Emergency Department or Telemedicine program which has provided increased access to stoke/trauma care to outlying communities. Patient services are also offered at the Neuromuscular Clinic, the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Research and Treatment Center at Upstate Health Care Center.

Upstate Neurosurgery

The Upstate Neurosurgery department offers the largest neurosurgical team in Central New York.  Our faculty and residents provide services to patients at Upstate University Hospital, which has an entire hospital floor dedicated to our patients with neurological disorders. In addition to providing advanced care and technologies, our multispecialty group supports patients throughout the Upstate Health System in multiple outpatient locations for your convenience.

Together, we seek novel solutions through basic, translational and clinical research aimed at finding new treatments and improved strategies for disorders of the brain and spine.

The Pediatric Neurosurgery division, affiliated with the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, provides care for children across the country with structural disorders of the brain and spinal cord. Our team includes expert pediatric neurologists, neuroradiologists, neonatologists and intensivists in order to deliver care throughout the many centers within the Institute.

Upstate Neuro Radiology

The Divisions of Interventional Radiology (IR) and Neuro Radiology are staffed by board-certified radiologists specifically trained in their select field of radiology. They are supported by a staff of technologists and nurses dedicated to providing our patients with the safest, highest quality, and most efficient care possible using the most advanced technology available.

The Neuroradiology team works together with your neurologist or neurosurgeon to develop your care plan. Many of the procedures we perform replace invasive surgeries, effectively shortening your hospital stay and/or recovery time.


Upstate Neuro Pathology

The Neuropathology Laboratory offers diagnostic services to aid in the identification of diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord, muscle, and nerves. Our neuropathologists work closely with clinicians throughout the institute to provide the most accurate diagnostic information in order to determine the best treatment options for you.
