Video EEG Referral Form

The Epilepsy Program at Upstate Medical University has received the highest accreditation as a Level 4 comprehensive program that serves adults and children.

Our providers accept referrals for cases with difficult diagnostic questions or patients with seizures that have not responded to traditional treatment methods.

The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) for adults is located at the Upstate University Hospital Community Campus. The Pediatric Monitoring Unit is located at the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital. The video EEG monitoring performed at the EMU compliments the other diagnostic methods to develop the best course of treatment for Epilepsy. Data gathered at the EMU allows physicians to evaluate the type of seizures to develop a treatment plan and to identify non-epileptic seizures.

In collaboration with Upstate Neurosurgery, we have developed a successful Epilepsy surgical program which includes localization and removal of the epileptic focus. Our team consults regularly with the adult and pediatric neurosurgeons.

Our providers are engaged in clinical research and work closely with scientists within our institution and other regional and national institutions all with the goal to improve the treatment of Epilepsy.

Experts in Epilepsy Treatment

Upstate's Level-4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Center's multidisciplinary team consists of Epileptologists, Neurologists, Nurse specialists, Nurses, Nurse Coordinators, Social Workers, Case Management, Neurosurgeons, Neuroradiologists, Neuropsychiatrists, and Neurology residents.

This team approach—along with the highest level of technology in monitoring, evaluating, and treating Adult and Pediatric Epilepsy—offer the best outcomes for patients with Epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) allows patients with Epilepsy to stay overnight to have their seizures monitored, recorded, and studied. A common reason for referral to the EMU is to provide treatment of uncontrolled seizures, including medication management by experts in the field of Epilepsy.

Our providers will address other treatment options such as Vagal Nerve Stimulator (VNS), Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS), Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) or Resective Epilepsy Surgery if needed. Resources are provided to the patients, family members, caregivers or others upon discharge to manage their diagnosis.
