Residency and Fellowship Programs at Upstate Medical University

Clinical Training Program and Curriculum

Both first and second year fellows participate in Child Rounds, Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds, and weekly didactics.

First Year

  • Total of four months working on the child and adolescent inpatient unit at Hutchings Psychiatric Center, University Hospital, and Hillside Children's Center. The remaining time is spent seeing patients in the Child & Adolescent Outpatient Clinic at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
  • In addition to continuing at the Outpatient Clinic, the remaining eight months will be spent rotating through Pediatric Neurology, Consultation Liaison Child Psychiatry, outpatient Adolescent Medicine, School Assessment, ADHD Evaluation Clinic, and Adolescent Addiction Psychiatry services.
  • Longitudinal experience in research project is recommended to begin during the first year.
  • All time for didactic lectures, supervision, child rounds, seminars and grand rounds is protected time during all inpatient, outpatient and off site experiences.

Second Year

  • Residents continue their work in the Outpatient Clinic at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as well as providing outpatient care at Hutchings Psychiatric Center Outpatient Clinic.
  • Inpatient Consultation/Liaison Services at University Hospital as well as outpatient consultation through NYS Office of Mental Health grant for Project TEACH.
  • Continued work on experience in research projects and scholarly activities.
  • Elective month (resident developed or opportunities in Forensic/Child Abuse, Women's Mental Health, Onondaga Nation community  psychiatry/primary care initiative.)
  • All Second Year Residents will spend four months serving as Administrative Fellow.
