Do you accept transfer students?
Yes, we welcome transfer students. The maximum number of credits a student can transfer to the baccalaureate program is 30.
Do you give preference to in-state applicants?
No, we do not give preference to in-state applicants. Our online program engages students nationwide.
What is the GPA needed to apply to the BS in Nursing program?
A cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
What is the application completion deadline for the Fall semester?
All documents must be submitted by July 1.
What is the application completion deadline for the Spring semester?
All documents must be submitted by November 1.
How does the application process work?
Our application process is completed entirely online. All of our applicants are transfer students, therefore they have to fill out a SUNY Transfer Student Application and an application for Upstate Medical University. Your resume will have to be uploaded to the online Upstate Medical University application system. Our SUNY Upstate online application provides for the electronic submission of letters of reference. You will input the name and contact information for each provider in order to submit your application. Once you have added this information, the system will contact your recommender via e-mail with instructions on how to complete a recommendation for Upstate Medical University.
Once you submit your application, it is reviewed by the Office of Admission and then shared with the College of Nursing Admissions Committee for review. After a decision has been made, you will receive an email notification with a status update. Admitted students receive a formal letter of acceptance detailing any relevant conditions and pertinent next steps.
Where can I find information on letter of recommendations?
Our SUNY Upstate online application provides for the electronic submission of letters of reference. You will input the name and contact information for each reference in order to submit your application. Once you have added this information, the system will contact your recommender via e-mail with instructions on how to complete a recommendation for Upstate Medical University. Letters should come from nursing professionals who can comment on your clinical expertise and academic abilities (faculty, supervisor, and/or preceptor/mentor). Please note that our office does not accept paper letters of recommendation.
Can I apply for the bachelor’s program while I am still a student in my associates degree program?
Yes. Typically, students in RN programs apply in their last semester of the program.
How long does it take from the time I apply to get a decision?
Once an application is complete, students will receive an email letting them know that their application is complete and will be reviewed by the admissions committee. When the review is complete, applicants will be notified by email as to the status of their application. Applicants are reviewed on a rolling basis in the order in which their applications are completed.
Can I make changes to my application after I submit it?
You cannot make changes to a submitted application, however you can send updates, such as a request for a new letter of recommendation writer or updated resume to apply@ngskmc-eis.net

How does the Financial Aid work?
Is criminal background check required even if I work at Upstate?
Yes, all new students must complete a criminal background check.
Is the program 100% online?
Yes. Our program offers 100% online learning.
How are students tested on their knowledge?
A variety of evaluation methods are used to test students on their knowledge. Some examples are quizzes and tests, papers, scholarly discussions, and presentations. Rubrics are used by faculty to grade assignments in a consistent manner.
Are lectures prerecorded?
You will not be required to attend live lectures. Some courses use pre-recorded lectures to deliver course content. Other forms of content delivery may include reading assignments, articles, videos, and PowerPoint presentations.
What platform is used for instruction?
Are students able to connect to each other and work collaboratively?
Yes, absolutely! Students have the opportunity to discuss course topics using the discussion board, but can also meet outside of the course as well. You can meet in person or utilize Webex or Zoom to virtually meet. The library on campus is a great place to meet up to work together on group assignments or to study together. Some courses do require group work, which is a great opportunity for you to get to know your fellow classmates and work collaboratively.
Are there clinicals that I need to complete through the BS in Nursing program?
There are two courses, NURS 444 and NURS 490, that each requires you to complete a 45-hour practicum. Your professors can help you find a preceptor; however, you can choose your own as well if they meet the required qualifications.
